OMPT calculator rules: plan on doing the arithmetic yourself

Short answer
Prepare as if no calculator will be within reach, because the proctored environment restricts what sits on your desk and the questions are engineered so that clean algebra, not number crunching, carries you through. Verify the current policy at omptest.org when you book, since rules can change between intakes. But whatever the fine print says that week, students who prepped calculator-free walk in with an advantage, and students who prepped calculator-dependent walk in with a handicap.
This is the question I am asked most often after "which test do I need", and I understand why. Years of school maths build a reflex where the calculator is part of your hand. The OMPT is designed by people who know that, and who want to measure the maths underneath.
Look at what the questions want from you
OMPT questions are built to resolve cleanly. Discriminants come out as perfect squares. Logarithm equations collapse to small integer solutions. When an OMPT-A question asks you to solve an exponential equation, the intended path is two log laws and a division, not eight digits of decimals. If you find yourself wanting a calculator mid-question, that is usually the question telling you that you have taken a wrong turn.
That is the texture of the whole test. The arithmetic in it, powers of two, fraction sums, square roots of the usual suspects, is deliberately the school-level kind. What gets tested is whether you reach for structure first. A calculator habit trains the opposite reflex, and reflexes are exactly what a 2.3-minutes-per-question pace exposes.
The dependency is worse than the arithmetic
What I observe in tutoring is rarely that students cannot compute 7 times 8. It is that calculator-dependent students have stopped trusting themselves to, so they hesitate, double back, and burn seconds on every numeric step. Across 52 or 64 questions, that hesitation tax costs more points than any single hard topic. The cure is embarrassingly simple: two weeks of doing all practice arithmetic by hand, and the trust comes back.
What "clean algebra" looks like in practice
Take a typical exponential-decay setup: a quantity halves every 5 hours and you are asked when it falls below an eighth of its starting value. The calculator route hunts for the crossing time with trial numbers. The intended route notices that an eighth is three halvings, so the answer is 15 hours, done in your head from structure alone. Both routes exist on almost every OMPT question. The test measures which route you see first, and calculator-free practice is what trains your eye toward the second one.
The same applies to logarithm work, which is where A and B candidates most want a calculator. OMPT log questions resolve through the laws: bases are chosen so arguments collapse, and answers land on small exact values. When a practice question of mine genuinely needs a decimal, I have made an authoring error, and the official items are built with the same discipline. Trust the design. If the numbers are getting ugly, back up and look for the structural move you missed.
What this means per variant
The advice holds everywhere but the pressure point moves. On OMPT-A and OMPT-B it is speed: routine algebra at pace. On OMPT-D and OMPT-F, with 21 long problems in 180 minutes, it is error propagation: one sloppy hand-computation in step two poisons everything after it, so slow, checked arithmetic wins. On OMPT-E the probability chapters involve more raw counting and multiplying than students expect; combinatorics by hand is its own small skill, and the drills treat it that way.
A word on scratch paper technique, because it replaces the calculator more than any drill does. Write intermediate steps down, even quick ones. The students who resist this see hand-arithmetic as a memory feat and exhaust themselves holding four partial results in their head; the students who write three short lines per question are faster and wrong less often. Your scratch page is external memory. Under proctoring it is the only external anything you have, so practise using it well: one question per block, working down the page, answers boxed so a later check takes seconds.
And the SOWISO-style interface adds one more reason to practise clean exact values: answers are often entered as expressions or exact numbers, not decimals. A student who computes 1/3 as 0.33 on a calculator and types that in has manufactured a wrong answer out of a correct solution. Exact fractions, exact roots, exact logs, which is also how every mock on this site expects your answers.
So: check the official rules page when you book, because that page outranks me. Then prepare as though the answer is "pen and paper only" regardless. If some allowance exists on the day, you will simply be faster than you needed to be. No one has ever failed the OMPT by being too fluent in arithmetic.
