OMPT-D: why the calculus variant is the hard one

Short answer
OMPT-D is the hardest member of the family by most measures that matter: the widest syllabus (242 topics across 11 chapters, geometry and integration included), the longest sitting (180 minutes), the highest fee tier (€270 at last check), and a format of just 21 questions, which makes every single one worth nearly five points. omptest.org suggests around 120 preparation hours. Physics, mathematics, computing science and AI programmes are its usual owners. It is passable, and passed constantly, but it punishes the sprint-style prep that works on the A and B.
D students arrive in my sessions with a particular flavour of dread, usually caught from a forum thread. I want to replace the dread with a map, because the D is not mysteriously hard. It is hard in three specific, trainable ways, and knowing which three changes everything about how you spend your 120 hours.
Hard in what way, exactly?
First, breadth. The D's eleven chapters run from numbers and algebra through functions, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, trigonometry, geometry, and integration. That is every strand the OMPT family tests except statistics, in one exam. Nothing can be safely skipped, because with 21 questions sampling 242 topics, any chapter can appear and each appearance is expensive.
Second, depth per question. A D question is a small project: establish a function from a description, differentiate it, locate something, verify it, report an exact value. Five dependent stages, where a slip in stage one silently corrupts four correct stages after it. The scored skill is not brilliance but sustained, checked working, which is a different muscle from the one the A trains and the reason A-style drilling transfers poorly.
Third, the brutal per-question stakes. On a 52-question test, abandoning one stubborn question costs about two points; on the D it costs nearly five. Miss four questions outright and you have spent your entire margin against a 75% cutoff. This flips the standard pacing advice on its head: on the D you almost always fight for every question, because there is no crowd of cheap questions behind it to bank instead.
The 120 hours, allocated
My default split for a D candidate with six weeks: two weeks rebuilding the algebra-functions spine at full reliability, because it is load-bearing for everything else; two weeks on trigonometry and geometry together, since the D likes questions where they meet; a week and a half on differentiation and integration with the emphasis on multi-step applications; and the final half week on full 180-minute mocks under real conditions. Students with four weeks compress the front, never the mocks.
A warning about the geometry chapter specifically, because it ambushes people. Many strong calculus students have not touched serious geometry since age fifteen, and the D includes it as a full citizen: circles, coordinate geometry, the places trig and geometry overlap. Diagnose it early with a timed mock rather than discovering the gap in week five, and give it real days on the plan if the mock says so.
Pacing 180 minutes
Eight and a half minutes per question sounds luxurious to everyone who has not sat a long-form paper. In practice the D fills them. My checkpoint scheme: be near question 7 at the hour and question 14 at the two-hour mark, and treat the leftover as verification budget, because on a test where each answer is five points, checking is not a virtue, it is scoring. When a question stalls completely, spend two minutes extracting whatever partial progress the format rewards, write the stage you are stuck at in your scratch work, and move; return with fresh eyes in your margin time. Fresh eyes solve a remarkable fraction of stage-three blocks.
Fatigue is the other opponent. Three hours of sustained multi-step work is an endurance event, and you train endurance by doing it: at least two of your final mocks should be full-length, at your real desk, at the hour of your booked slot. Students who only ever practise in 40-minute bursts hit a wall around minute 130 of the real thing and donate their last four questions to it.
Money, timing, and the €270 question
The D shares the higher €270 fee tier with the F, which raises the price of the "book early to see what it is like" experiment to something close to a decent textbook per attempt. The free mock answers the same question. On timing: with around 120 hours of preparation to schedule, D candidates need to start earlier than everyone else, and the backwards calendar from the booking post applies with less slack. Grading still takes about 8 business days; retakes still need repair time. Six weeks out is a comfortable start for a student with intact school calculus. Three weeks out, with rust, is a conversation about moving the test date.
I will end with the reframe I offer every dread-carrying D student. The programmes that assign the D, physics, maths, computing, run on exactly this material from week one of September. The exam is not a wall in front of your degree; it is the first assignment of it, taken early. Prepare for the D honestly and you arrive at university with the one thing first-year STEM students never have enough of: fluency in the prerequisites.
